First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has opened Global Port Services’ (Scotland) new Aberdeen base.
Global Port Services (Scotland), part of the Global Energy Group, celebrated the opening of its new facility with the visit from Ms Sturgeon, who toured the 16,000 sqft facility at Aberdeen Energy Park with Group Chairman Roy MacGregor.
Global Port Services has 81 full-time employees and forms part of the Group’s Marine & Logistics portfolio, which includes the Nigg Energy Park and other marine services businesses, both in Aberdeen, further north and overseas.
With depots already in Invergordon and Nigg Energy Park, supporting the oil and gas, renewables and local construction and industrial sectors, the new facility forms part of the Global Port Services growth strategy to become the leading supplier of heavy mobile cranes in the UK.
Nicola Sturgeon said, “I am delighted to open this new facility for Global Port Services at Aberdeen Energy Park. This impressive new operation has expanded as a result of demand from the sector and I know the team here have plans for further expansion in the future. It is also further evidence of the continued strength of our world-leading oil and gas supply chain. As a country that boasts a strong engineering and manufacturing skills base which is recognised globally across the oil and gas industry, we have a clear competitive advantage.”
Roy MacGregor added, “Global Energy Group has invested more than £20 million in new mobile heavy cranes and equipment since starting the business just over a year ago. We now operate a modern fleet of mobile heavy cranes, boasting some of the most technologically advanced cranes in the industry.
“As a Group we are committed to investing in our people, as well as our facilities and equipment. Since Global Energy was established in 2005 we have supported around 600 candidates through a skills development programme to bridge the industry skills gap, by providing training in the core fabrication disciplines of welding, pipefitting and plating skills.
“We remain committed to the Modern Apprenticeship programme, recently recruiting a vehicle maintenance and repair mechanic apprentice for Global Port Services. This candidate is part of a team of five who maintain the cranes and vehicles at the company. We are actively looking to bring more talent into the organisation as we continue to grow and develop in the market.”
