New Volvo material handler introduced

VOLVO CE has unveiled its new EW200E material handler at the same time as its bigger brother, the EW240E, is updated with a new, longer straight boom.

Designed and manufactured in Germany, the new EW200E weighs 22.6 tons and is powered by a Stage V Volvo engine, which provides 129 kW (173 hp). This machine has a 5.5m or 6.25m straight boom, 4m gooseneck arm, and a forward reach of 9.2m or 10.1m.

Volvo has also extended the reach of its existing EW240E material handler, introducing a new 7.25m straight boom, which brings the reach – when combined with the existing 5m long gooseneck arm – to 12m.

The EW200E has been purpose-built for waste handling applications. Volvo said that thanks to components shared with the EW240E and other existing Volvo wheeled excavators, the manufacturer has spent time ‘perfecting’ the new machine to meet specific job requirements.

The material handler features a specially adapted hydraulic system. Other modifications, when compared to a standard excavator, include the hydraulically elevated cab, four stabilisers as an option, full rubber tyres and straight boom that can be fitted with either a 4m gooseneck arm or 3.5m sorting arm. Volvo material handlers can be ordered from the factory without the steering column, allowing operators to control the entire machine using only the joysticks.

The cab can rise up to 5m above the ground and benefits from double-damped cab mounts to reduce noise and vibration. The joystick control concept pioneered on the EW240E now allows outriggers, blade and cab-raising functions to be completed without removing your hands from the joysticks.

Both material handlers have an adjustable arm-in limitation feature, which Volvo explained is designed to prevent collision between the cab and the grapple. Brightly coloured handrails and added steps on the outriggers make getting in and out easier.

To assist easy service, greasing points are grouped together, while filters are placed behind wide-opening engine doors accessible from ground level on all E-Series wheeled excavators. Volvo added there is improved access to areas such as the pump compartment, and an optional waste package includes protective screens and a reversible fan to keep the cooling system clean.
