Housebuilding activity helps drive rise in equipment sales

SALES of construction equipment in the UK rose by 3.8% in the second quarter of 2018 compared with the same period last year, new research has revealed.

Figures released by the UK equipment statistics exchange showed a continuing upward trend in sales, but at a slowing rate of growth. In the first half of 2018, equipment sales are up 5% in total compared with the first half of 2017 – amounting to over 16,000 units.

Sales of crawler excavators (over ten tonnes) rose by 11% in Q2 when compared with the same period in 2017. Telehandlers and mini/midi excavators (below 10 tonnes) rose by 10% and 3% respectively.

The Construction Equipment Association said housebuilding activity seems to be supporting demand for smaller machines.

Wheeled loaders and backhoe loaders showed growth in Q2, but compaction rollers remain “weak”, continuing to show declining levels of sales compared with 2017.
