HITACHI Construction Machinery (Europe) has launched a new educational initiative in a bid to inspire the next generation of workers.
The company’s rental division is offering to supply technical schools and colleges across Europe with a machine free of charge for 12 months, supported by its dealer network.
The aim is to help develop future talent by helping students to become skilled operators, technicians and engineers. It will also increase awareness of Hitachi’s construction machinery and its transition to LANDCROS next year.
During the year-long machine placement, all servicing and maintenance will be carried out by the local authorised HCME dealer if required. Afterwards, the excavator or wheel loader will be available for rental contracts in each market.
HCME is currently in the process of confirming participating schools and dealers, and the types of machines they will require.
The manufacturer said the European construction industry has long faced challenges in recruiting workers to address skills shortages and meet demands from evolving regulatory requirements, building and infrastructure commitments, and technological changes.
HCME highlighted a UK National Audit Office report that stated 45% of construction vacancies in 2024 were difficult to fill because applicants lacked the required skills. In the EU, construction is among the sectors most heavily affected by labour shortages, according to a report by the European Labour Authority (ELA).
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to contribute to the development of skilled operators and support the next generation of engineering talent within the European construction industry,” said Dr Hubertus Muenster, HCME director sales, rental, distribution management. “Having a reliable orange excavator or wheel loader on site will give students invaluable practical experience and set them up for a successful career. It will also enable our dealers to raise their profiles in the locations in which they operate, and build relationships that may lead to potential recruitment and new business opportunities.”
