Sunbelt Rentals marks sustainability milestone as demand for HVO soars

HVO from Sunbelt Rentals

SUNBELT Rentals UK & Ireland is celebrating a sustainability milestone as an approved supplier under the Renewable Fuel Assurance Scheme (RFAS), following continued growth in customers switching from conventional diesel to RFAS-certified hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

Since becoming the first UK rental provider to achieve RFAS approval in April 2024, customer switches to RFAS-certified HVO have resulted in over 30,000 tonnes of calculated COâ‚‚ emissions being avoided. Sunbelt Rentals said the milestone reflects growing demand for lower-emission fuel solutions, particularly in applications where electrification and other zero-emission technologies are not yet practical.

RFAS independently verifies the provenance of raw-material feedstocks, chain of custody and associated greenhouse gas emissions before accrediting suppliers. This is designed to provide customers with confidence in the fuel they purchase and evidence to support their carbon reporting.

Carley Hutcheon, head of sales and fuel at Sunbelt Rentals, said, “Reaching two years as an RFAS-approved supplier is an important milestone, but what matters most is the impact our customers have achieved. By choosing RFAS-certified HVO, our customers have been able to reduce emissions while benefiting from independently assured fuel provenance and transparent reporting. As organisations continue to look for practical ways to reduce emissions, HVO provides a proven solution for applications where alternative technologies are not yet suitable.”

The move supports Sunbelt Rentals’ sustainability strategy, Our Planet, which focuses on reducing emissions across its own operations while helping customers lower emissions through equipment, alternative fuels, and data-led solutions.
