Sunbelt Rentals helps highlight safety challenges faced by different road users

Cyclists and HGV drivers at London safety event

SUNBELT Rentals UK & Ireland worked alongside the City of London Police to deliver a road safety initiative designed to improve understanding between cyclists and HGV drivers.

The Exchanging Places Cycle Safety event gave more than 70 cyclists the opportunity to sit in one of Sunbelt Rentals’ vehicles and see the road from a driver’s perspective. Participants experienced first-hand the blind spots and visibility challenges that professional drivers face when operating large commercial vehicles in busy environments.

By stepping into the vehicles, cyclists gained insight into what drivers can and cannot see, helping to highlight the importance of awareness and shared responsibility on the road.

To further strengthen understanding, Sunbelt Rentals reversed the experience. Drivers and members of the company took part in a cycle ride through central London, experiencing the city from a cyclist’s perspective and gaining a greater appreciation of the challenges faced when travelling alongside large vehicles in high-traffic areas.

Mark Keily, health, safety and sustainability director at Sunbelt Rentals, said, “Taking part in the event myself, I personally learnt a great deal from experiencing the road from a cyclist’s perspective. It reinforced just how valuable it is to understand the challenges faced by different road users and how those insights can influence safer behaviours.

“Taking the time to see the road through someone else’s eyes can influence behaviours and decision-making in a positive way, helping to reduce risk and make our roads safer for everyone. We’re delighted to support the City of London Police in delivering such an important event and continuing the conversation around road safety.”
