CONSTRUCTION materials group Breedon is aiming to increase production and improve fuel efficiency after enrolling its team on a plant operator training course run by Finning.
All 34 operators based at Dowlow Quarry in Buxton will take part in the Eco-Drive advanced performance training programme. The course is designed to equip operators with the skills and knowledge to optimise the way they work.
Finning UK & Ireland, in partnership with Caterpillar, developed the scheme as part of its customer training offer, covering best practice, safety, and competency with a particular focus on activities and applications that have a direct impact on fuel burn.
While the quarry sector faces significant environmental challenges, Finning explained that advanced technology in areas like machine control and fleet management is providing new opportunities for businesses to integrate more sustainable strategies into everyday activities.
Phillip Shimwell, works manager at Breedon’s Dowlow Quarry, said, “We’ve been working with Finning for more than 20 years, tapping into the power and performance of a wide range of Cat construction equipment. This includes leveraging the technology and data from operator systems and controls.
“Now we are coupling this with Eco-Drive group training to ensure operational practices on site are not only maximising the potential of our machines, but also optimising fuel usage for reduced operating costs, better site efficiency and more sustainable fleet performance.”
The training delivered on site will centre around equipment such as wheel loaders, excavators, off-highway and articulated trucks. On completion, a site improvement plan will be developed with Breedon, followed by ongoing guidance and support from Finning.
Greg Wheeler, customer account manager for Finning UK & Ireland, added, “We know that putting practical, operational techniques in place results in significant savings over time, making group training courses a commercially viable investment. The Eco-Drive course is very much about achieving results for our customers, which is why a production benchmark has been set by Breedon so that it can compare operational outputs on completion of the training.
“Implementing even small changes on site can reduce waste, cut emissions, lower costs and help extend the life of equipment by protecting against unnecessary wear and managing engine power.”
