Expectations are high for Liebherr cranes in Scotland this year

2025 marked another positive year for Liebherr’s mobile and crawler cranes in Scotland, sales manager Lyle Sibbald has told Project Plant.

Customers took delivery of a range of models – from compact two-axle 40-tonne units to eight-axle 700-tonne cranes.

Lyle revealed that expectations for 2026 remain high, with deliveries planned across the country, reaching even the most remote locations such as the Isle of Lewis and Orkney.

Significant investments in the renewable energy sector drove the demand for heavy-lift cranes, resulting in the delivery of three 700-tonne LTM 1650-8.1 machines. These units were taken by three Scottish crane hire specialists – Forsyth of Denny, Global Crane Services and Leggat Plant Ltd (Part of the Mellex Group) – all of whom have contributed to Scotland’s shift toward green energy.

Liebherr is set to make a strong return to ScotPlant in April, showcasing a line-up of plant equipment, including an exhibit from the manufacturer’s mobile crane product division

Making its UK debut at the show will be the LTM 1055-3.3, the newly released 55-tonne crane that was ordered by Stoddart Crane Hire last April at bauma. The unit is the first of its kind in the UK.

Lyle Sibbald said, “2025 was a great year for Liebherr, we saw an increased demand for large mobile cranes required for the renewables sector as well as an increase in mid-sized cranes for general crane hire projects. Additionally, the increase in mobile and crawler cranes in Scotland meant that it was also a year for strengthening Liebherr’s aftermarket support.

“In response we created a service co-ordinator role and added a fifth field service engineer to the team to support the market.”
