Speedy Hire volunteers help transform North Ayrshire garden into outdoor haven

Garden following transformation project

SPEEDY Hire has teamed up with children’s charity WellChild to complete a garden transformation for seven-year-old Dolly-Mae and her family in North Ayrshire.

Described as previously unsafe and inaccessible, the garden had been covered in hard paving stones, making it difficult and dangerous for Dolly-Mae to enjoy. A team of Speedy Hire volunteers braved challenging weather conditions to create a beautiful, safe, and accessible outdoor haven.

The project began with the removal of paving stones and raised planters. Volunteers then built and secured timber frames for composite decking and artificial grass, using post concrete to ensure long-lasting stability. To make the garden fully accessible, the entire garden level was raised, removing the step from the rear patio doors. The final touches included composite decking, soft artificial grass, and a small step at the far end for access to the back gate.

The result is a welcoming space where Dolly-Mae can now play freely without risk of injury. The transformation has provided her family with a special place to enjoy together.

Roger Merritt, helping hands project manager at WellChild, a charity dedicated to making it possible for children and young people with serious and complex health needs to be cared for at home, said, “Everyone worked their socks off to achieve the fantastic result! Dolly-Mae’s parents were so thankful for everyone’s efforts, which resulted in the amazing transformation – you could just tell that this will change all their lives, but most importantly give Dolly-Mae a little bit of independence as well as, of course, precious time outdoors in a safe environment!”

Steve McElroy, operations director (Scotland – west), Speedy Hire, added, “The weather made this a challenge, but knowing the benefit that this would provide to Dolly-Mae helped us to power through and get the job done. I’m very proud of all the team for their amazing efforts. It really is a pleasure to work on projects that WellChild undertake that provide so much value and enjoyment.”
