Hillhouse Group completes ‘landmark’ delivery for wind farm project

Project team at Mill Rig Wind Farm

HILLHOUSE Quarry Group has delivered a ‘landmark’ supply of 3,600m³ of high-grade concrete for the Mill Rig Wind Farm, a major renewable energy project near Darvel in East Ayrshire.

Developed by OnPath Energy and constructed by RJ McLeod, the wind farm will generate 33.4 MW of clean energy – enough to power more than 45,000 Scottish homes.

The delivery involved six continuous foundation pours of 600 m³ each, supported by a fleet of 15 vehicles. Concrete was supplied from three locations: Hillhouse’s Rapid R3000 plant in Troon, a Rapid R4000 plant on London Road in Glasgow, and an on-site McCrory MCM60 mobile plant.

Hillhouse Quarry Group was able to utilise stone and sand from its Troon and Garpel Quarries to supply the contract. The firm said combining both materials meant local people and local produce delivered all the concrete for the site, ensuring ‘top quality from the ground right through to the final pour’.

Robert McNaughton, MD, Hillhouse Group, said, “The support and delivery of ready mix concrete, utilising mobile operations for the local project at Mill Rig Wind Farm has been a real milestone for Hillhouse Quarry Group. We’re proud to play our part in a project that not only supports Scotland’s drive towards a more sustainable future but also delivers lasting benefits for the local community. By supplying the materials and expertise needed to make this development a reality, we’re helping to power homes, create opportunities, and contribute to a greener, more resilient Scotland.”

Martin Kellerman, construction director at OnPath, added, “Mill Rig Wind Farm represents another important step in our mission to deliver sustainable, community-focused renewable energy across Scotland. By working cross-sector we’ve been able to combine technical excellence with a strong local supply chain to deliver clean, secure energy for over 45,000 homes.”

Shakthivelu Thangavel, project manager at RJ McLeod, commented, “Delivering the civil engineering works for Mill Rig Wind Farm has been a significant project for RJ McLeod, and we’re pleased to have worked alongside OnPath Energy and Hillhouse Quarry Group to bring it to life. The scale and complexity of the foundation pours demanded careful planning, seamless logistics, and close collaboration between all partners. Our team is proud to contribute to a development that will provide renewable energy to tens of thousands of Scottish homes and help drive Scotland’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future as well as paving the way for skills development in our emerging workforce.”
