Rethinking Futures challenge attracts strong interest ahead of PlantWorx 2025

OVER 200 students aged 12-18 are expected to take part in Rethinking Futures at PlantWorx 2025 in September.

The project is designed to connect secondary schools and colleges with the construction, engineering, and plant sectors through a practical challenge and careers engagement.

The initiative has already confirmed strong participation from across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. 18 school and college teams have signed up to take part in the live build competition, with more expected to join over the coming weeks. Several additional schools not participating in the build element are attending the careers event.

At the heart of Rethinking Futures is a material handling challenge, inspired by machinery such as grab lorries, HIABs, cranes, and excavators. Each student team is tasked with designing and building a working model capable of lifting and moving objects using the materials provided. While the Rethinking Futures team will support each school, students will lead the design and build process themselves. Schools are also encouraged to document their progress, creating short videos which will be shown as part of a display during the live event at PlantWorx.

A range of organisations have committed their support, including Wirtgen Group,  Lindum Group, AMEY Briggs, and Murphy Group (the headline sponsor). Industry groups, including the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA), and other major manufacturers are also involved.

Stuart Favill, operations manager at PlantWorx and founder of Rethinking Futures, said, “Rethinking Futures gives students a genuine, hands-on experience that connects them to the real world of construction and engineering. It puts them in charge of designing, building, problem-solving and presenting their ideas in front of industry.

“This kind of practical engagement helps build confidence, teamwork and awareness of where a career in the sector could lead. We’re very grateful to all the companies, colleges and organisations supporting Rethinking Futures and helping to make the challenge a meaningful experience for every student involved.”

Thursday 25th September is Student Day at PlantWorx. Whether you’re studying construction, exploring career options, or simply curious about the industry, Student Day is open to all schools, colleges, training providers, youth groups, and families. With live machine demos, hands-on exhibits, and the chance to speak with apprentices and industry professionals, it’s designed to offer a practical and engaging way to discover if a career in construction and engineering is an option.
