Good Evans: contractor seals mammoth 56-machine Kobelco deal

M&J Kobelco deal

A groundworks and civils contractor has concluded a massive deal to purchase 56 Kobelco excavators, supplied by UK dealer Molson Group.

M&J Evans’ decision to expand the fleet with Kobelco machines followed ‘extensive’ market research. Molson said the move aligns with M&J’s commitment to environmental responsibility, with Kobelco excavators renowned for low fuel consumption thanks to a combination of ‘fuel-efficient and reliable engine technology and advanced hydraulic systems’.

Paul Allman, director of plant at M&J, commented, “Integrating these new Kobelco excavators into our fleet is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency across all aspects of the business while minimising environmental impact. Kobelco excavators’ high fuel efficiency and reliability will support our sustainability goals in delivering a high-quality and cost-effective service to our clients.”

The haul includes a mix of SK28SR-7, SK50SR-7, SK85MSR-7 and SK130LC-11 models. The excavators have been supplied with Miller quick couplers, a range of Strickland buckets, and Trackunit vehicle tracking systems.

The procurement of the new plant equipment is part of M&J’s broader strategy to maintain a ‘technologically-led and environmentally friendly’ fleet. In 2022/23, the company invested over £32 million in new equipment, focusing on machines with low-emission engines and high productivity.

Adding the Kobelco excavators is said to further strengthen this initiative, with the diggers set to be deployed in support of various housebuilding projects nationwide.

“Whilst the Kobelco excavators offer us the fuel savings we require, this doesn’t come with any deterioration in productivity or reliability,” Paul Allman added. “We expect the excavators to be welcomed by our operators as they are very highly specified and will integrate into our operations seamlessly.”
