JCB has expanded its X Series crawler excavator portfolio with the launch of the 145XR – a second reduced tailswing model.

The machine builds on the success of the larger 245XR. The 145XR has a 27% shorter counterweight overhang than a conventional 140X, which JCB said makes it ideal for highway carriageway projects or on confined urban sites.

The model weighs in at 15-18 tonnes, depending on specification, and can be supplied with a mono-boom or a two-piece triple articulating (TAB) configuration. The mono-boom layout provides a maximum digging depth of 6,027mm with a 3-metre dipper, while the TAB boom has a maximum of 6,167mm. Forward reach is up to 8,801mm for the mono-boom and 9,230mm for the TAB.

Powered by JCB’s Stage V Dieselmax engine, the 145XR boasts an output of 81kW (108hp). This features Auto-Stop and Auto-Idle engine functions. Engine working speed has been reduced to 1,700rpm, increasing fuel economy by 10% and cutting overall noise levels, the manufacturer added.

The model comes with the full-sized JCB Command Plus ROPS cab, featuring a heated air suspension seat and 10” touchscreen monitor with the JCB UX interface.

Optional extras include auxiliary hydraulic circuits with up to 15 attachment settings and a premium heated and cooled seat. LED lights are standard, with options available to increase to up to 14 LED work lights. A 360° camera system, integrated within the 10” display, can also be offered, along with all-round handrails.

Paul Swallow, JCB’s business head for excavators, said, “The JCB 145XR delivers all of the performance that customers need in a compact design with an ultra-tight slewing radius. It is perfect for working in tighter areas, delivering best-in-class performance and ultimate operator control.”

The 145XR was launched at a JCB press event, which also saw the unveiling of a new system using artificial intelligence designed to reduce the risk of harm and injury to workers.

JCB has developed an integrated pedestrian recognition system – JCB INTELLISENSE – for use on Loadall telehandlers to reduce the risk of being struck by moving materials handling machines. The system identifies, assesses, and mitigates risks, while enabling contractors and operators to manage potential hazards around the machine and its operating environment.

JCB INTELLISENSE

The JCB INTELLISENSE system is initially being launched on two key models, the JCB 540-140 and the 535-125 Loadalls, following calls from construction firms for pedestrian recognition systems. JCB revealed it is the first major OEM manufacturer to provide a factory-fit solution.

The system utilises four cameras, three of which are AI cameras (two side mounted and one rear-facing) as well as a forward-facing standard camera to improve visibility in line with the object detection and visibility aids standard ISO16001:2017.

When the system senses a pedestrian in close proximity, audible and visual warnings inside the cab are triggered for the operator and externally to warn the pedestrian and other workers. The system also provides an operator alert button, where the operator has the capability to record a 10 second data segment that is automatically sent to, and stored in, the cloud.
