Akela Ground Engineering invests in new piling rigs

Akela's JCB-JX piling rigs, fitted with BSP hydraulically accelerated hammers

AKELA Ground Engineering, part of Glasgow-headquartered Akela Group, has announced a significant investment in new plant equipment.

The new fleet includes three JCB-JX piling rigs, fitted with BSP hydraulically accelerated hammers. The rigs are capable of driving steel and concrete piles of up to 8m-long sections.

The tracked rigs are designed to boost the firm’s piling and foundations work, as well as enabling cost savings due to the ‘lightweight and lower bearing pressure’, which in turn reduces piling platform thickness. This also minimises ground disturbance and potential damage to sensitive surfaces.

Akela explained the rigs can adapt to a range of job conditions. The ease of transporting the lighter rigs can also reduce transport costs and carbon emissions associated with moving machinery between sites.

The rigs are fitted with the Tier V engines, which is essential, particularly with the implementation of low emission zones in several major UK cities.

Will Payne, Akela Ground Engineering MD, said, “This significant investment in our fleet and technology demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible service to our clients. It is an exciting time of growth for Akela Ground Engineering as we continue to expand our UK footprint and add to our team with new offices in the Midlands.

“By modernising our equipment and integrating advanced technology, we can enhance and deliver exceptional value and a wealth of environmental benefits to our clients and partners, particularly the leading house builders in the UK.”
