HITACHI Construction Machinery UK (HCMUK) has teamed up with Synergy Hire to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, started by the late Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir.
HCMUK is a sponsor of the Newcastle Falcons rugby club, who Doddie played for during his career.
The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was setup in 2017 after Doddie was first diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. He was determined to help fellow sufferers and find ways to further research the disease.
The official launch of the fundraising conincides with the game between Newcastle Falcons and Southern Knights on Saturday 11th February. Several HCMUK volunteers will be helping to fundraise at the game, alongside the machine that forms the main drive of the campaign.
HCMUK has designed and branded a ZX130LCN-7 13-tonne class excavator in the famous Doddie tartan and this machine will be on display at the game, where match goers can get up close and donate on the day.
The machine will then join Synergy Hire’s fleet, with the firm committed to contributing a proportion of the rental income from this ZX130LCN-7 to the charity each quarter.
David Roberts, CEO at HCMUK, said, “Hitachi Construction Machinery UK have a long history with Newcastle Falcons and so we are very aware of how celebrated Doddie is at the club, and the legacy that he has left. Following the sad news of Doddie’s passing last year we were unanimous in our decision to support the My Name’5 Doddie foundation in 2023, not least to support the charity’s vision of ‘A World Free of MND’ which we can all get behind.
“In partnership with our sister company Synergy Hire, we are sure that many customers around the UK will want to hire the machine, not only to contribute to the charity but to have this eye-catching machine working on their job site.”

MND is a devastating illness so when we were approached about getting involved, we jumped at the opportunity to assist in helping to raise awareness. By donating a proportion of our hire revenue for this machine, we will boost the fund whilst keeping the honour of Doddie alive in the hope of finding a cure. Doddie’s tartan livery on the rear of the machine is instantly recognisable and will be a major talking point on job sites.”
