Formal start of HS2 project delivers ‘much needed’ boost to construction workforce

THE formal start of HS2 construction is a ‘much needed’ boost to thousands of workers and the supply chain, the GMB union has said.

HS2 Ltd and its Tier One contractors expect to recruit for around 22,000 roles in the coming years to build the Phase One route.

Jude Brimble, GMB national secretary said, “The UK urgently needs to deliver investment in infrastructure, and the start of main works is a critical step in the construction of HS2. The construction industry is struggling and today’s announcement will be a much-needed boost to thousands of workers and the wider supply chain.

“At the same time, it is vital that the start of main construction work is handled safely and fairly, with clear avenues for workers to make their voices heard when concerns arise. That’s why GMB is looking to engage with HS2’s contractors to ensure that this railway is built as a world-class, unionised project.”
