Liebherr’s $60m US expansion complete

LIEBHERR USA, Co has hailed its newly expanded campus in Virginia, which has added 251,000 square feet to its existing HQ.

The $60 million expansion in the city of Newport News includes a new office building, warehouse and equipment repair and maintenance workshop.

The facilities house employees working in administration, finance, HR, sales, information technology, marketing, product support and distribution for nine different product units.

The move, which the manufacturer revealed was conducted with enhanced cleaning and social distancing measures in place, completes a journey that started almost two years ago when ground was spoken on the project.

Liebherr is this year celebrating 50 years since opening for business in the US. The existing four-storey administration building dates to the early 1970s and will be retained to house employees of Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News.

Approximately 500 people work at Liebherr’s Newport News campus.

Dr Torben Reher, managing director, Liebherr USA, Co said, “Besides moving into a new facility which is a highlight for our employees who contribute immensely to our success in the US, what stands out for me the most, is the message that this $60 million investment sends to our customers. Apart from investing in research and design for cutting edge technology, we have a long term focus while looking at our business and the relationships with our customers. Thus, we want to grow together and our new site is the evidence for this approach.”

The new campus will increase production operations for concrete pumps and repair capacity for mobile and crawler cranes, as well as for construction equipment. There is also a new training centre.
