New guidance issued for checking plant after extended period of non-use

THE Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has published guidance for conducting pre-operational checks on plant equipment on sites following the Covid-19 lockdown period.

With some sites having to close abruptly several weeks ago, the CPA said some plant may not have been sufficiently prepared for extended non-operational periods. While most modern machines can cope with extended periods without requiring actions by a maintenance team, a spell of non-use can have ‘small but noticeable’ effects when placed back into service.

The CPA guidance is focused on the areas of machine components that require checks beyond the normal manufacturer-derived pre-operational activities and are applicable for common mobile and static-type machines.

The guidance is not intended to apply to all plant types but provides an overview of what should be taken into account when re-instating plant left for an extended period.
