A Volvo EC140E excavator has made its way to Sutherland to assist in a wide variety of construction projects.
The model is the second bought by Edward Mackay Contractor, with director Scott Mackay highlighting fuel economy, operator comfort and productivity as being important factors.
“We’ve been operating Volvo articulated haulers for a long time and in recent years we have been adding Volvo excavators to our mixed fleet of equipment and found them to be productive economical machines, finding favour with our operators in terms of comfort and performance,” Scott said. “In particular, we find the EC140 an optimum-sized excavator for building roads on wind turbine and pipeline projects and compact enough for working on confined building sites.”
The EC140E is powered by four-cylinder Stage-IV Volvo engine, developing 122 nett hp.
Pump flow is said to be controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to ‘reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque’. Boom and arm geometry are described as providing ‘highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities’, while hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders, as are quick-fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service.
Other options specified by Edward Mackay include additional LED work lights, guard rails around the machine’s superstructure and a boom proximity limit switch. The EC140E has been supplied with a powerlatch quick coupler and a range of buckets including a 75” hydraulic tilt bucket.
