From Dumfries to Dundee for UK first

A Borders-based hire firm has taken delivery of the first Hyundai HX130 LCRD in Scotland – and the 13-tonne machine is already hard at work on a new mixed-use development in Dundee.

Dumfries Plant Rentals Ltd (DPR) was eager to get hold of the new compact-radius excavator to build on its existing Hyundai fleet. “We’ll now be running 14 Hyundais, all of different sizes,” Fraser Dykes, director of DPR told Project Plant. The firm’s fleet ranges from 13 to 30-tonne machines.

Fraser said the company had been “really impressed” with the performance of Hyundai since initially taking the brand on four years ago. “We’ve been pleased with their performance, and this is just a step further, taking on this new model. We were quite happy to be the first to try it in the country.”

Fraser explained that the “adaptable” HX130 LCRD features a dozer attachment and is “ideal” for small civil works and construction site conditions. It is powered by a 73.6hp (55kW) Perkins 854F Tier 4 final/Stage IIIB-compliant diesel engine with diesel particulate filter, meaning there is no need for AdBlue.

The machine is currently out on hire to Cardiff-based contractor Carter Lauren for works in Dundee. “For what they’re wanting, it’ll be ideal,” Fraser added.

The unit was provided by Cumbrian firm Taylor & Braithwaite. Ian Burton, sales director said, “We first had an idea the product was going to be here last September, so I ordered a considerable batch of them. We ordered 15 units then so we were probably the first dealer in the UK to receive them.

“I do a lot of business with Fraser and Trevor Keys (fellow DPR director); they buy quite a few Hyundais and it was the first one due into the UK with the blade on.”

Ian added that he expected the new machine to be a “big seller” for Taylor & Braithwaite due to its compact size.

Reflecting on the relationship between the two firms, Fraser added, “The service is fantastic…no complaints there at all, even with older machines now that are starting to need service kits and odd breakdowns, we’re finding the parts are coming next day. Ian Burton is a straightforward guy that’s running a family business; this is great for us as the client as he is passionate about his business and his products, going that extra mile to please.”
