Lifetime achievement award for former CPA chief exec

Colin Wood addressing the crowd upon receiving his lifetime achievement award

FORMER chief executive of the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Colin Wood has been recognised with a lifetime achievement award.

Colin, who stepped down from the position of CPA chief executive earlier this year, was awarded the European Rental Association (ERA) Lifetime Achievement Award in Vienna, Austria, during the ERA’s annual convention.

The accolade is awarded to individuals whose career achievements have made a profound impact on the industry, the CPA said.

Prior to joining the CPA, Colin spent his entire career in the crane hire industry, where he held senior management and board positions since 1980 with hire firms including Attwoods, BCHC (British Crane Hire Corporation), Scott Greenham, G W Sparrow, GWS (Grayston, White & Sparrow) and Baldwins Industrial Services.

Colin took up the role of CPA chief executive in 2001, having been an active CPA Council member for a decade.

Commenting on the award, Colin said, “I am most pleased to have received this prestigious award. Working in the crane rental industry for over 35 years and working for the CPA for the last 17 years, and indeed with the ERA, has enabled me to give something back to the industry. In particular, working to create operational safety guidance for the benefit of the construction equipment industry as a whole.”

Pierre Boels, ERA president added, “Colin’s engagement with rental went beyond the UK. He was a vice president on ERA’s board during its important early years and his work as ERA’s treasurer helped set standards that are still being followed today. Throughout his career he has been a friendly presence on the scene. As he moves into retirement, the industry will miss his personality as much as it will his experience.”
