G-Series haulers reinvent a classic

COVER
The A30G articulated hauler makes its UK debut at ScotPlant.

VOLVO will be displaying two new models at ScotPlant – the A30G articulated hauler and the P6870C paver.

Since their debut in 1966, Volvo Construction Equipment’s articulated haulers have stood as the industry’s gold standard — and the leader in off-road productivity. Their new G-Series carry on that tradition, with new features designed to improve comfort and productivity.
Robust and reliable, the new G-Series articulated haulers — including the A25G, A30G, A35G, A35G FS, A40G and A40G FS — are suited to a wide variety of applications in quarrying, mining and earthmoving.
The powerful, new turbocharged six-cylinder Volvo engines have been redesigned to adhere to stringent Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. The Volvo drivetrain and a unique inline dropbox designed for high ground clearance are purpose-built to ensure perfect harmony and optimised performance.
The drivetrain’s unique design delivers high rimpull, lowers fuel consumption and provides reliability in heavy-duty applications. The proven concept of oil-cooled wet multiple-disc brakes on the A35 and A40 models is now being introduced on the A25G and A30G, reducing maintenance costs and increase uptime, even on muddy or dusty job sites.
To keep the G-Series surefooted in even the most treacherous of sites, automatic traction control (ATC) and unique differential locks are standard. The ATC system automatically switches between drive combinations of 6×6 and 6×4 to ensure lower fuel consumption or provide maximum traction when needed. If necessary, all differentials can be 100% locked, causing all wheels to rotate at the same speed.
With the A35G FS and A40G FS, full hydraulic suspension on all wheels increases productivity and makes for a more comfortable ride.
The A35G, A35G FS, A40G and A40G FS can be equipped with Volvo’s award-winning onboard weighing system, which allows for precise machine productivity monitoring, helping to optimise payload and minimise wear, tire damage and high fuel consumption. On FS models, the system uses full suspension pressure sensors to monitor weight, relaying information to load software integrated into the machine’s electronics.
Indicator lights tell the hauler operator, as well as the operator of the loading unit, whether the hauler is at part or nominal load or whether it has been overloaded.
The maintenance-free rotating hitch that connects tractor to trailer enables high ground clearance, boosting accessibility and drivability in tough conditions.

The P6870C paver

The centrally positioned ROPS/FOPS-equipped Volvo Care Cab gives the operator a commanding view of the job site, and ergonomically positioned controls are close at hand for ease of use. Without a threshold to cross, the cab can be easily and safely entered through a wide-opening door. And the G-Series climate control system comes with the cleanest air filtration system in the industry for clearer breathing.
The G-Series provides machine owners, operators and technicians with access to a wealth of data that promotes greater uptime. These machines come fitted as standard with CareTrack, Volvo CE’s telematics system.
With its Stage IIIB-certified engine and a new design, the Volvo P6870C ABG paver is now quieter, more productive, and up to 30% more fuel efficient while reducing CO2 emissions — making it even better prepared to take on demanding paving tasks.
Volvo has packed the P6870C ABG wheeled paver with features to help customers save fuel and time — as well as tackle the most challenging tasks. The P6870C is geared maximum paving flexibility to take on jobs ranging from housing estates to major highway projects.
The powerful engine features a wide band of reserve power for paving in difficult conditions or at maximum widths. The 6870C ABG will also allow operators to breathe easy with a new fume extraction system that removes bituminous fumes from the working environment at 83% efficiency without significantly increasing fuel consumption or obstructing the operator’s view into the auger channel.
The system works by utilising a fume intake with a fan located directly behind it. The fan captures and transports fumes via two tubes which release the fumes at the top of the paver. The design features a very short distance between the intake and the fan, eliminating the need for extra piping and funneling in the auger channel — and thereby increasing efficiency, preventing power losses and ensuring maximum visibility into the auger channel.
For greater versatility, the paver is equipped with three drive modes: paving, shunting and transport.
Full engine rpm can be selected if paving conditions require full power. Volvo wheeled pavers offer an extra mode called shunting mode. In this mode, paving functions are deactivated, and active steering is engaged for turning with an extremely tight inner radius of 2.5m.
The spacious and comfortable operator environment gives a commanding 360-degree view of the entire paving process, with a direct view into the hopper and auger and a clear view of the work area. The adjustable seat can be extended beyond the outer edge of the paver for an improved view.
The P6870C features the electronic paver management II (EPM II) system, which guides the operator through working functions with simple, step-by-step instructions, in addition to monitoring fuel consumption. For extended uptime, the EPM II features real-time onboard diagnostics notifications. Menus for engine data and paver functions are shown clearly on the large color screen.
The EPM II settings manager lets the operator save paving settings and parameters to use on similar paving jobs in the future, allowing for more consistent results. The EPM console is protected by a lockable cover and the screed control units can be stored away in a lockable compartment.
Volvo pavers have excellent traction for stable, sure-footed operation and precise application no matter the conditions — and the P6870C is no exception. With a three-point balance to stabilize the tractor platform, the paver’s unique hydraulic self-leveling suspension system ensures that traction is maximized and paving remains smooth — even when the terrain isn’t.
